For a diplomat taking up a new posting there is always the challenge of getting to grips with one's new environment. This means trying to understand the new culture, finding ways to blend in and learning to better communicate with others around you. Having previously worked in France and Pakistan , I learnt some French and Urdu but this was not really helpful for my work in the UAE. The challenge was therefore to learn some Arabic. The only problem, as I've long ago learnt, was that the older one gets the more difficult it is to learn a new language! It was therefore with some apprehension that I finally enrolled for Arabic classes with Dr. Yousef - with the support of my wife who joined me. We considered ourselves lucky to have "Ustaath" Yusuf as our "professor" because of his relaxing (call it non-threatening!) yet very professional approach to introducing novices such as ourselves to the intricacies of this strange sounding new language. Slowly, lesson after lesson, we progressed from simple phrases such as "I come from South Africa" to some rather impressively sounding statements such as "Is it possible to visit the new Professor from India in your old car next Wednesday morning before class?" We could speak Arabic! - At least it felt like it. Well, I completed level four of the course when work pressure forced me to interrupt my studies, but my wife bravely pushed on to complete all seven levels. I treasure my basic Arabic and try to strengthen and expand its small base. After all, Ustaath Yusuf often remarked that completing a particular level is like obtaining a driver's license: you now have to go out and drive! My greatest challenge is now to progress from "learner's license" to becoming competent driver!

After living in Dubai for 4 years and being married to an Arab for even longer, I felt very conscious and embarrassed that I could only understand a few words in Arabic. When I finally organized myself to commit to a course it was quite difficult knowing where to learn. Fortunately I found a course With Dr.Yusef which is perfect as I work in Dubai Media City .

I have just completed level 6 and have just one more level to go which I'm really quite sad about. Our tutor Dr. Yousef is a very patient and encouraging tutor and has our best interests at heart. The classes are small therefore we are at a great advantage as it is more personalized and obviously get a lot more practice.Dr.Yousef takes his classes very seriously and ensures that we are not overloaded with too much information and is very quick to understand what each person's strengths and weaknesses are.The classes are always very friendly and not too intense, the levels obviously get more and more difficult but with Yousef's guidance and the friends you make during the course we all manage to encourage each other to go onto the next level. It is a big commitment to make and a difficult language to conquer, but once you start and begin to understand conversations heard on the street it gives you immense pleasure and satisfaction to see how far we have come in just a few months.

I would recommend this course to anyone whether a complete beginner or intermediate, my only regret is that I didn't find this class earlier

Although I have lived in Dubai for almost 12 years I spoke very little Arabic. I decided that the time had come to try and learn it properly. I signed up for Dr.Yusef's class in June 04. I was immediately hooked. I loved the way we concentrated on speaking Arabic and after the first few lessons I was able to greet Arabs as I went about my daily business. We soon progressed onto simple sentences and I loved the challenge of memorizing vocabulary and completing homework. The classes were informal but full of information. At the end of every lesson my mind was buzzing and I was eager to try out my new found information on any Arab I met. I'm now about to progress onto Level 5 and I'm looking forward to expanding my vocab and hopefully increasing my confidence when speaking this language

Some people learn languages for social reasons. Others to help them in their work. When I decided to take up learning Arabic, my initial thoughts were just to "learn something new" and "add to my skill set". My initial approach when I joined Dr.Yusef's Arabic program was that I would take up 2 or 3 levels & then stop. When the program began, I was pleasantly surprised at the style of teaching, the professor's positive approach, the flow-speed, the class numbers & the content of the course itself. The curriculum focuses on the most commonly used words & phrases. All of these created an atmosphere which was never dull & conducive to easy learning. I found myself constantly interested & kept signing up for each successively higher level. Having just completed Level 6, I feel happy to recommend the course to my friends. Those who have Arab speaking friends or colleagues at work would find this program especially beneficial

My husband and I have been studying conversational Arabic with Dr.Yusef about 6 months now and we thoroughly enjoy it. We've just completed level 4 and are about to start level 5. Our tutor - Yousef - is very friendly, patient and encouraging and it makes the learning process that much easier. Our group is small and we get plenty of time in the class to practice both speaking and listening to the language. The atmosphere is friendly and encouraging and I think we are both a little surprised when we realize just how much we have learned since the first lesson, when some of the only words we knew were 'shukran' and 'insha'allah'. Now we can talk about so many different subjects with confidence. Great course - I'd recommend it anyone".

Having completed my Level 3 of spoken arabic, it gives me immense pleasure to say that I have been successful in conversing under Dr.Yusef - a true guide and a teacher.Spoken arabic is vital in the arab world without knowledge of which we are like fish out of water. I am glad that Preston has spared no efforts in helping non-arabic speaking people to face the challenges with a brighter future. I am happy to be associated with the prestigious Preston University.
